The half-built house across the street is like a great big laboratory for learning the in’s and out’s of the new Nikon. I saw this row of nails lying flopped on top of a box and the first thing I thought was “depth of field”. So I switched the camera to aperture priority and started playing.
This shot is unmodified. This is how the camera saw it.
55mm, f/5.6, ISO 100, Shutter 1/15

This is one of the coolest photos ever!
This is outstanding!
Very nice. Pretty crisp for only 1/15 of a second. I wouldn’t shoot anything hand held at less than 1/60. Good job.
Sensualist and D.L. – Thank you so much for the kind words! It means a lot.
Clicker – Thank you! I toyed with the idea of bumping the ISO to 200 or even 400, but I was in a position where I could sit on the floor and use my knees as a makeshift tripod. Inhale -> Shoot while exhaling -> hope the VR on the lens is as good as advertised.
Tremendously imaginative and well executed photo.
Why not publish your photos of walls
Lovely! Allow me to gush…
Now that I’ve gushed, I noticed a certain laissez-aller in the regularity of your postings. February… or June? That it?! Come on! We want to see lovely black and white portraits of the kids! Must put this new Nikon to good use…
Yesbuts – Thank you very much for the encouraging words! And there will be walls forthcoming. You’ve inspired me.
Nathalie – Thank you too! And there’s a story there regarding the February to June discrepancy. Fasten your seat belts .. it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
I started in photography when I was in high school, which was a while back. My first good camera was a Minolta X700, which I still have and still love. But after we got married, money was tight and film processing was a luxury, so I packed my equipment away.
Fast forward 18 years, and insert much fawning over DSLRs.
The Colorado snow shots were all taken with my wife’s Fuji Finepix S5100. It’s a good camera that she uses as a point-and-shoot. It has decent enough shutter and aperture control, but you need an engineering degree from Vanderbilt to drill down far enough in the menus to use them.
Fast forward to this February.
I picked up a small point and shoot (the Samsung S85) with limited shutter and aperture control. I threw this blog up in February with high hopes for the little Samsung, but those hopes died on the vine. It wasn’t the camera’s fault … it was an expectation issue on my part. I expected more of it than it was able to provide. It’s a nice little camera that I still keep in the car for those spur of the moment shots.
Fast forward from February to June. Father’s day was last Sunday, and my birthday is this Saturday (I’ll be 45 according to the calendar, though my lovely bride says I act more like a kid … to which I say, “Phhllllbbbpppttt.”). And that’s how, on June 9th, my nifty new Nikon D60 bundle came home to stay!
I have been a whirling photographic dervish for nearly two weeks now, and it shows no sign of letting up. I’m loving the 55-200 VR lens, but the 18-55 VR that it came with gets plenty of use, too.
See what you get for asking?
I love this one Mr Crash.
LOVE IT
Thanks Kimba!! You’re sweet to say that. I appreciate it very, very much.
